Interviewing the Delhi Sultanate – A Time Travel Classroom Drama
As part of the Grade 7 History lesson on Expansion of the Delhi Sultanate, students of Parle Tilak Vidyalaya (ICSE) participated in a creative role-play titled “Interviewing the Delhi Sultanate.” The story followed a curious boy who travels back in time to the reign of Alauddin Khilji. As he walks through the Sultan’s capital, he admires the marble arches, the scent of sandalwood in the air, and the beauty of pearls, beads, and ancient market stalls. He even visits one of the early coffee houses. His unfamiliar clothes and mannerisms attract attention—some call him a sorcerer, others believe he’s a divine messenger. The people eventually guide him to the grand Diwan-i-Aam, where Alauddin Khilji sits in court.
Children dressed up as historical characters including Alauddin Khilji, Malik Kafur, market officers, nobles, spies, and townspeople. Using props like crowns, robes, coins, scrolls, and a printed map of the empire, they brought the era alive. As the time traveler interviewed each character, students shared information about military conquests, market reforms, and social life under Alauddin’s rule. The lively dialogues, realistic costumes, and dramatic setting helped students connect deeply with the lesson, making history not just something to be read—but something to be experienced.
