Discovering the Art of Spinning : An Experiential Learning Journey

As part of the Bagless Days initiative, students of Grades VI, VII and VIII of Parle Tilak Vidyalaya (ICSE) participated in an enriching and hands-on activity centred on the traditional Indian spinning wheel, the charkha. The session was organised with the valuable assistance of Mrs. Rajashri Choche and Ms. Bhargavi Seth from Mani Bhavan, who introduced the students to the art and significance of spinning thread using this iconic instrument

The resource persons brought a charkha to the school and demonstrated the fascinating process of spinning cotton into thread. Students watched with keen interest as they explained the technique, patience and skill required to operate the spinning wheel. The highlight of the session was the opportunity for students to try their hand at spinning thread themselves .

The activity went beyond learning a traditional skill; it offered students a meaningful connection with India’s rich cultural heritage and freedom struggle. The charkha, famously associated with Mahatma Gandhi, symbolises self-reliance, dignity of labour, simplicity and the spirit of Swadeshi. Through this experience, students gained a deeper understanding of how spinning and khadi became powerful symbols of India’s struggle for independence and the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat.

The charkha activity beautifully embodied the spirit of Bagless Days by taking learning beyond textbooks .The session left students with more than a newly acquired skill—it instilled in them a renewed respect for India’s heritage and the timeless values woven into every thread spun on the charkha.
