National Handloom Day: Celebrating the Diversity of Indian Handlooms
The Archivers, the History Club of Parle Tilak Vidyalaya (ICSE), Secondary Section, celebrated National Handloom Day with the aim of creating awareness among students about India’s rich handloom heritage and the importance of supporting traditional weavers and indigenous textiles.
The celebration began with an informative video prepared by the History Club students. The video introduced students to the significance of National Handloom Day, explaining why the day is observed, the background behind its observance, and the importance of preserving India’s handloom traditions. This was followed by presentations by students dressed in traditional Indian outfits, who spoke about the textiles, regions, and traditions associated with the attire they wore.
The video was screened in the classrooms, allowing students to learn about India’s diverse textile heritage in an engaging manner. This was followed by a visit to a handloom exhibition organised by the History Club. The exhibition showcased a variety of sarees, dupattas, shawls and handloom fabrics representing different states of India. Students had the opportunity to observe the distinctive weaving techniques, patterns, designs and cultural traditions associated with various regional textiles.
The exhibition was also visited by the teaching and non-teaching staff, who appreciated the efforts of the students and the manner in which India’s rich weaving heritage had been presented.
The celebration provided students with a meaningful opportunity to connect history and culture with traditional craftsmanship, while fostering greater appreciation for India’s weavers, textiles and diverse cultural heritage.
